My passion is for drawing. I regard it as a very powerful medium in its own right. I work mainly in black & white using inks, wax pencils, charcoal, etc, on paper or canvas boards.

I have had a strong interest in the figure since art college, and I love observing people around me or on the street, looking for unusual or quirky elements in their physical appearance, clothes, body language, facial expressions or gestures.

I try to let my character drawings evolve naturally. I usually start with the face and work outwards from that, to see where it takes me. It can be greatly satisfying seeing new characters emerge and watch a narrative unfold.

Evocative black & white drawings in beautifully illustrated children’s books caught my attention as a child. These drawings fired my imagination more than the big colour spreads and I was forever trying to copy them. Big thanks to Dad for buying them - I still have many of these books to this day!
